Strawberry Candy, Blackcurrant, and Red Apple
Juicy, sweet, and satisfying, this Rwandan coffee comes to us, for the fourth year in a row, better than ever. It is brilliantly fruity, with notes of sugary strawberry candy and tart berries such as blackcurrant. The aftertaste is somewhat floral, with a soft red apple note as well. This coffee has a heavy body that compliments it’s juicy flavors perfectly.
About the Producer
This very special coffee comes from Gasharu in Rwanda and is produced by a group owned by the Rusatira family. This group features over 1600 partner farmers and over 300 community employees, over 70% of whom are women. A lot of effort is made to accommodate these employees' needs to ensure that they are able to maintain their work and income, as well as care for their children.
This ethically-sourced Arabica is from the southern mountains of their country. It is grown along the shores of Lake Kivu near the Rwanda Congo-Nile Divide and the Nyungwe Forest National Park at elevations of 1700-2100 meters above sea level.
The Nyungwe Forest National Park where this coffee is grown is one of Central Africa’s most well-preserved mountainous rainforests and home to huge biodiversity, including 25% of Africa’s primate population. The elevation, soil, and climate of this region form the most ideal growing conditions for coffee.
We believe this coffee is some of the best out of Rwanda year after year, and are proud to feature Gasharu for the fourth year in a row, thankful for its excellently sweet flavor and the thoughtful hands that bring it to us.
What is the Natural Process?
The Natural process is a sun-dried process that involves the drying of cherries whole without the additional use of any other materials, including water for washing or machines for depulping. (Hence the term "natural!) Before the coffee is dried, it is harvested from the trees, floated in water, then sorted to remove any fruits that are not up to standard. From there, the sun-drying begins.
