Tasting Notes: Pink Grapefruit, Orange Creamsicle, Floral

It has been too long since our last Kenyan feature, and we have been longing for one. But this lot from Ngarutua in Embu, Kenya is worth the wait! Bursting with fruity flavors, we taste grapefruit and orange backed with the sugary sweetness of a creamsicle that perfectly compliments the full but dry body. Then, it finishes with complex florality. Savor it while it's here.

Ngaratua Estate is a family farm owned and operated by the Muthathai family since 1940. The farm is located on the Southeastern slopes of Mount Kenya in the county of Embu and was founded by Mr. Paul Muthathai Ngarutua. The first coffee trees were planted on this farm in 1958 when Kenyan laws only first began allowing native Kenyans to plant coffee under the British colonial rule. In the 1960s, when these laws loosened, the farm expanded to its present size. Since the original owner passed away, the farm is now owned and operated by his son Peterson Muthathai and wife Purity, and is 18 acres of farmland, with a washing site that was added in 1994.

Process: Washed

What is the Washed Process?

The washed process is one of the most common processing methods. Freshly harvested coffee is sorted for ripeness and the fruit and pulp is removed from the beans within the first 24 hours after harvest for drying.
